How Encala works

Encala works in two ways

How does Encala help?

CF causes the body to produce thick mucus that makes it hard for your intestine to absorb fat and nutrients—so you have to ingest more calories to compensate.

Encala contains an easily absorbed type of fat called lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), which combines with the fats from other foods and drinks, helping your body absorb additional fat through the intestinal wall. In this way, Encala improves your nutritional status, including your weight, height, and body mass index (BMI), beyond what you would experience on pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) alone.

PERT supplies enzymes, but may not completely address the malabsorption of fat and GI discomfort:

Encala is a unique source of healthy fat and it helps you absorb the fat that’s already in the food you eat

Adequate nutrition in people with cystic fibrosis (CF) depends on:

Eating additional calories to get the nutrition, weight, and growth their bodies require.

Digesting nutrients, especially fat and fat-soluble vitamins, which is a challenge with CF. CF can cause pancreatic insufficiency (PI), which means your pancreas does not produce enough lipase—an enzyme that helps break down fats so they can be absorbed.

Absorbing healthy fat and nutrients is essential to good health. Even with PERT, 15% to 25% of the fat and fat-soluble vitamins you eat may not be absorbed.
